Fletcher Lake, Ontario, Canada 2005 with Francine August 7th-14th

As the travel diatribes continue.....

After searching for an inexpensive all inclusive get-a-way, we found a 7 night Costa Rican adventure and excitedly told my good friend , Francine, in Canada of our find. She offered all inclusive should we visit her..so after taking into consideration the temps of home (over 100), Costa Rica (high 90's) and Canada (mid to upper 70's).... you can see where we are now!

We hopped a flight in West Palm Beach, Florida to Charlotte and from there to Toronto, Canada. Only 4 hours air time..not bad..but the 8 hour drive from Toronto to Lake Fletcher was an adventure. We finally arrived at midnight! Tuckered out..Francine was rudely awakened by two rowdy Americans...she loved it and stumbled out of bed to visit with us briefly.

After a wonderful rest, we awakened to a cool breezy morning and breakfast on the deck overlooking the lake. Later we used the paddle boat to explore the far side of the lake and beyond...returned to get some worms and minnows to make a fishing trip. Out we go again and finally find the hot spot, but only manage to land two nice pickerel. Don't know yet exactly what they are but I'm told delicious. Need a few more for a neighborhood get- together, however.

The cooler temps are great! The polar bears cool! It was especially cool to be able to swim with the bears during feeding time. I wonder how many tourists go missing this way??? Doug and I both took advantage of the opportunity to ham it up in the ice cold pool with the bears. Luckily they were eating vegetables this day. Hoping to see Moose...and tried to find some for dinner to no avail..Oh well..there are still a few more days to go..

We were honored with a visit to Francine's Mom, Yolande. What a treasure this woman is. I can see where Francine learned the quick wit and wonderful sense of self that endears me to her. Her mother is wonderfully witty and a kind heart that I'm sure everyone enjoys! It's her cabin on the lake and for me she will always be The Lady of the Lake.

Time to go home tomorrow. We leave for the 8 hour trek to Toronto for a brief overnight stay before a 6:15 am flight on Sunday morning. It's been great fun and exactly what we wanted..relaxingly cooler!

One last thing. I just learned what pickerel is. In the United States it is the same as a walleye! Fun facts to know and share!

AUGUST 1, 2005 PREPATIONS FOR CANADIAN ADVENTURE

It's been a while since I've updated things here, but now that preps have begun for a trip to Canada, it only seems right to catch things up here.

My British friends arrived here on July 17, 2005. By the time we got home, it was midnight and they had been up for over 24 hours. They we quick to bed and quick to rise when the kids awakened at 5 a.m. Shortly the rest of the house was up and scouraging breakfast tidbits.

Shopping and lunch out were on order for the day. But the only purchase was a pool for the kids and nice buffet lunch at Ryan's Steak House. The next day we tripped to Jekyll Island for the kids to frolic on the beach and a driving tour of the Island and the Millionaires Village.

Four of my friends went down to Florida to visit with mutual friends there. Four days later they returned and once again the house felt comfortable with everyone here!

In the mean time, my best friend Doug and I have begun planning a trip to cooler climates and ultimately decided on Canada. Fortunately, I have a terrific friend from my cruise ship days that lives there and has a cabin on the lake. After inquiring of her (more or less inviting myself), she gladly welcomed a visit from her old comrade. Keep in mind that we worked together for 7 years and have maintained contact since then. It will be great to get into some cooler temps...it's been 100+ here for two weeks...and drier air...the humidity here has been 85+ for the past three weeks. So we named our price on "Price Line Dot Com" and got a round trip ticket at a great price and an affordable rental car for the 8 hour drive from Toronto to Cochrane, Ontario...
Just had a foreboding thought regarding the cabin on the lake!!!! Wasn't there a B movie, horror flick by the same name??? Hopefully this Cabin on the Lake bears no resemblence to that and that it will a nice relaxed respice for us. With canoeing, paddle boats and hiking trails, the polar bear habitat and the Polar Bear Express train ride to the rim, it's got to be just that...doesn't it? It won't be long before we know as we're set to fly away the morning of the 7th at 8 o'clock. The camera is ready and I know for certain that we both are as well!

So my British friends are departing on the 5th to return to England and I'll leave for Florida on the 6th...but I'll keep things posted or get things posted when I have internet capabilities...

So, until next post...stay safe!
