April 2 - April 14, 2006

We were happy to have an old friend show up Sunday morning to attend the blessing. He drove down from Bluffton, South Carolina. This little community is approximately 1.5 hours away, near Hilton Head Island.

After our day at the blessing and a terrific lunch, Rob invited us up for a visit. We happily agreed as the Khans have never been there or Hilton Head. I, of course, had agreed to cook. Low Country Boil is my favorite party dish, and by popular demand deviled crab was thrown into the mix along with a pot of crab stew.

After prep for this was started, and a few cocktails later, (never mind how many later), Rob decided he wanted to put the boat in the water. While we're doing that, the Khan's launch the kyaks and paddle around the creek near the house. They had a blast until the "sand gnats" began chewing on them with no mercy. Viscious little creatures and fresh meat is always a tasty treat for them.

Nothing would do later but for the kids to go swimming. Keep in mind it's still April, the pool heater has not been in use, and the water temp is around 60 something. The kids never knew it, or if they did, seemed to care less. They had a ball. Meanwhile, the cocktails continue..One down..(bottle that is) and a new one is under attack. Tasty but for the alcohol numbed taste buds. I've often wondered why we cook tasty foods when we drink like this..a can of beans would have worked just fine...but hey..it's a party and dang it, we're going to do it all!

After dinner, we sat around on the pool deck in front of a "copper pan" fire, designed just for that purpose...and would you believe that we continued to drink??? Well, we did, well into the wee hours...(man am I thankful that the camera was not out and about). Up fairly early the next mornig for a tour of Hilton Head Island and the terrific burger lunch at Fuddruckers...a must for every vistitor to Hilton Head.

The drive home was quiet and I'm not sure the reasons...hangover, jet lag, or just simple tiredness...but it was a terrific time and we can't wait to do it again..I think someone is calling me...Cocktails anyone??

APRIL 1, 2006 THE KHANS ARRIVE

The Khans, Cliff, Sue, Rajan and Ania arrived in Savannah Saturday, April 1st, 2006. A short drive later, they arrived home for a warm tasty meal and a bed. The next day, was the day of the annual local festival, The Blessing of the Fleet. In all of the years of visiting Georgia they have never been here while this event was taking place. So, we loaded up and went in for the day. We walked through town, the little vendors' booths, and even had a nice lunch at a local restraunt on the Darien River.

The parade of boats was to start around 2 p.m., but of course, ran a bit late, as always. Once underway, the boats participating made a single file progression up to the bridge. The priest was there to sprinkle holy water as throngs of people had gathered along the bridge and the waterfront to witness the happenings. Of all the boats in this county (McIntosh), only 12 boats opted to participate. Too bad that it was such a sad showing for an area that relies so heavily on the seafood industry for survival.

Everyone is tired, so we pack it in and head for home. Tomorrow is going going to be a long day for some of us...I mean, fishing..come on! How much harder and longer can it get???

The pictures following this post were taken during our day at the Blessing of the Fleet festival.
